Research Genre Production
Students will be able to produce writing that demonstrates their ability to navigate choices and constraints in a variety of public and/or academic research genres that matter to specific communities.

Project 1: Research Proposal
This assignment is a part of my Gordan Rule assignment, project 1, which calls for me to investigate a problem within my chosen field. This specific research proposal called for me to identify my research question for this project and outline the purpose of the project while acknowledging possible difficulties I may face throughout my research. This assignment fits the outcome of demonstrating my ability to navigate choices and constraints within research genres that matter to specific communities by showcasing my knowledge of how my specific research question is impactful to the communities within my field. My research question for this proposal was, “What barriers do pre-law students face on the journey to becoming practicing attorneys, with a focus on how wealth plays a role in this journey?” (Leonard 1). This question identified an issue within the community of pre-law students in the legal field
that I was able to understand through navigating genres that are present within the legal field. This assignment was impactful to me because it prompted me to generate ideas that concerned a specific community within the legal field and develop a research proposal based on these ideas. This is an important skill to have, as it is valuable to understand how certain things can impact a community of people. I reflected on my writing process as I formulated my research question and thesis for this assignment. Since the research question would be a major part of this assignment, I made sure to double-check my writing and make sure it sounded coherent as I completed my assignment.
Reading Response: Genre Identification & Analysis
This reading response assignment prompted me to read "Make Your 'Move': Writing in Genres" and apply my understanding of the text to my two chosen artifacts for my Gordan Rule assignment, project 2. This assignment fits the outcome of demonstrating my ability to navigate choices and constraints within research genres that matter to specific communities by prompting me to apply my interpretations of the reading to the genre analysis of my two chosen artifacts for Project 2. I identified multiple aspects of each artifact concerning their genre, tone, sentence structure, and more. When identifying the purpose of the genre for one of my artifacts, I stated, “Concerning the purpose of the Genre, my text-based artifact, Law School Confidential, written by Robert H Miller has a purpose that was meant to provide methodical advice concerning law school debt and how to finance one's legal education”
(Leonard 1). This displays my ability to understand how the purpose of the genre of an artifact applies to the legal field. This assignment was impactful to me as it allowed me to perform an in-depth analysis of my chosen artifacts for Project 2. I used this assignment to reflect on my project 2 writing as it provided more context on my analysis of my artifacts.
